Physically based two-moment bulkwater parametrization for warm-cloud microphysics
نویسندگان
چکیده
A two-moment bulkwater parametrization scheme for warm-cloud microphysics is developed via statistical analyses of results from a detailed parcel model. This computationally ef cient scheme is quite accurate and produces bulkwater properties which resemble the results from a fully explicit microphysical model. It responds sensitively to the effect of aerosol types on the cloud drop number concentration and the timing of rain initiation. Diagnostic formulae are also provided for the group fall velocity, number and mass sedimentation uxes, the radar re ectivity factor, and the effective radii of cloud drops and raindrops. This physically sound and easy to use parametrization scheme could be useful in improving the microphysical representation in regionaland cloud-scale models.

Impacts of a-priori databases using six WRF microphysics schemes on passive microwave rainfall retrievals
Physically based rainfall retrievals from passive microwave sensors often make use of cloud-resolving models (CRMs) to build a priori databases of potential rain structures. EachCRM, however, has its own cloud microphysics assumptions. Hence, approximated microphysics may cause uncertainties in the a priori information resulting in inaccurate rainfall estimates. This study first builds a priori...

This study compares a single-moment microphysics scheme to a double-moment microphysics scheme using four observed cases of a mesoscale cloud system. Previous studies comparing a single-moment microphysics scheme to a doublemoment microphysics scheme have focused on microphysical processes or overall dynamics, precipitation and morphology of cloud systems. However, they have not focused on how ...
متن کاملImplementation of a two-moment bulk microphysics scheme to the WRF model to investigate aerosol-cloud interaction
[1] A two-moment bulk microphysical scheme has been implemented into the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to investigate the aerosol-cloud interaction. The microphysical scheme calculates the mass mixing ratios and number concentrations of aerosols and five types of hydrometeors and accounts for various cloud processes including warm and mixed phase microphysics. The representation ...
متن کاملA new double moment approach for the warm-rain process based on the WSM6 scheme (WDM6)
The double-moment approach for the bulk microphysics schemes that allows more flexibility of the size distribution enabling the mean diameter to evolve in contrast to the single-moment approach has become one of the promising methods to improve microphysical processes in the mesoscale modeling area. Cohard and Pinty (2000b) showed the superiority of a double-moment approach in two-dimensional e...
متن کاملGlobal anthropogenic aerosol effects on convective clouds in ECHAM5-HAM
Aerosols affect the climate system by changing cloud characteristics in many ways. They act as cloud condensation and ice nuclei and may have an influence on the hydrological cycle. Here we investigate aerosol effects on convective clouds by extending the double-moment cloud microphysics scheme developed for stratiform clouds, which is coupled to the HAM double-moment aerosol scheme, to convect...
